Looking at a 2006 Odyssey tonight and need some help so that I can intimidatingly well-informed.
This one is the top-dog Touring with Nav & DVD. Unfortunately it does have the stupid Pax wheels (I’m not sure who’s dumber - Michelin for trying to make this a “thing” or Honda for thinking buyers want to buy $1,000 tires every 30k miles at the few places that can service them) and the ad says the scheduled maintenance is needed.
It’s $2000 and the tires have about a summer and Autumn’s worth of tread left. I’m not sure which scheduled maintenance is needed since it’s mileage (157,000) has it almost right in the middle of timing belt and water pump servicing intervals. I suppose it may just be an oil change notice, if I remember correctly Honda uses the maintenance light for those.
I see lots of complaints online of transmission shudder @ 40mph. I plan on buying lower-trim Odyssey wheels and regular tires versus the dumb PAX tires before winter.
Any other issues worth looking for? Known problem areas?

I did not know about PAX wheels so I looked it up. Wow that is dumb.

Sliding door rollers crap out. If left for too long, they’ll chew into the quarters. Lose those PAX tires and wheels as soon as you can. Just get a set of regular wheels and tires and swap your TPMS sensors over. Yeah, the torque converter judder sucks, but once it’s fixed, it’s usually good to go as long as you change the trans fluid every 15-30k. Rear A/C evaporators sometimes leak on models with rear A/C, and the radios aren't the most reliable either. I'm sure there's more, but that's all I remember.

Also, ignore that goddamn maintenance minder. Change the oil every 5k. Your engine will thank you.

The only downside to the PAX replacement is then you will not have a spare tire, so when you order new wheels, be ready to find a place for one in the car. (IIRC)
And yes, the shudder is real, the transmission from Honda was a bit soft in this gen of the Odyssey.
The other issue that we saw occasionally was the driver’s side slider would have a motor issue, but it was still pretty rare and always junkyard-able.

Sorry if I’m repeating what others say but yeah like all Odysseys, the automatic door motors and transmissions.
No need to go all the way down to lower trim Odyssey wheels, I’ve read another solution is last generation MDX wheels and those look fantastic on some Odysseys. There’s a picture of my personal favorite I’ve seen but I’ve also seen some with last gen TL wheels.

Buy a Mazda 5 instead.

If it’s an 06 touring for 2k, it probably needs more than an oil change.
Definitely check for the torque converter shudder, and the bells and whistles failing. Make sure to get to highway speed and get to very light throttle, to make sure there’s no surging or shaking with VCM enabled.

1) none to be found
2) too small

Did something take the place of the spare tire that came in other trims?

I’ve seen folks online swapping MDX wheels and it does look sharp. I don’t know what sizes they come in, but I’d rather get a smaller wheel and bigger tire

My suspicion too, but worth checking. The guy selling it has moved onto a different assignment and his deputy has a power of attorney to sell it. I think he’s desperate to get rid of it

Well I hope it works out. If it’s not limping, that’s a good deal.

I sold Siennas, so all I knew on it was the PAX was instead of a spare.
You can buy full kits for the rear with the mounting hardware.

I was all excited about how my Mini was optioned with a spare over run flats then I was messing around with the spare the other day. It hangs on a tray beneath the car meaning you get absolutely filthy every time you touch it. On top of that the car uses stud type lug nuts meaning that you have to clean the wheel in order to get it to seat onto the hub so that you can get the lugs started. I hope that I never have to deal with that spare again.

2007 base model driver here: beware the trans and I’ve heard the power doors. Other than that you should be fine. I wrote a review of it back in February ish.

Can you keep the rims and get some other tires instead? The wheels are kind of dull to me, but they add to the luxury of the van.

No, they have a unique rim lip design that locks the tire bead (of which only two Michelin tires fit in) so they can still be sealed without pressure. They’re super dumb and I feel Honda should offer replacement wheels to customers stuck with the PAX setup
